Scale Issues in Geographical Analysis and Gis by Nicholas J. Tate,

Scale Issues in Geographical Analysis and Gis by Nicholas J. Tate,
Scale has long been a fundamental concept in geography. Its importance is emphasised in geographical information science (GIScience) where the computational domain necessitates the rigorous definition data modeling essential and handling of scale. Geographical information systems are now used in almost every walk of life, but scale is often handled poorly in such systems. "Modelling Scale in Geographical Information Science "is written by an international team of contributors drawn from both industry data modeling essential and academia, data modeling essential and considers models data modeling essential and methods of scaling spatial data in both human data modeling essential and physical systems. This book is split into three sections to give a balanced coverage of the key problems, tools data modeling essential and models associated with scale. Part 1 considers the fractal model of spatial variation. Fractals are mathematical models of spatial variation which are independent of scale. Part 2 addresses the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), which continues to be the scale issue for census data. The MAUP is comprised of two component problems: a scaling problem data modeling essential and a zonation problem data modeling essential and is intrinsic to the spatial analysis of census-type data in which the areal units vary from place to place in size, shape data modeling essential and orientation. The concepts of changing scale data modeling essential and regularization are covered in Part 3. The emphasis here is upon the tools of geostatistics (for continuous field data) data modeling essential and generalization (for vector models) which are used to change the scale of measurement. This book is an essential read for all GIScience researchers, advanced students data modeling essential and practitioners who want to delve more deeply into the scale issues of the spatial data data modeling essential and spatial models that form the basis of their analyses.

Applied Mixed Models in Medicine by Helen Brown,

Applied Mixed Models in Medicine by Helen Brown,
"Applied Mixed Models in Medicine" is designed to give a clear understanding of the application of mixed models, which is becoming a popular method of stastistical analysis used for analysing medical data, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. This method often gives improvements over conventional fixed effect models, especially when data are unbalanced. Presently there is no other book covering the application of mixed models to clinical data, making this book essential reading for those involved in this subject. Features include: Takes a balanced view of mixed models by discussing some of the problems in their use data modeling essential and indicates where more conventional fixed effect models might be preferred. Easily accessible to practitioners in any areas where mixed models are used, including medical statisticians data modeling essential and economists Illustrated with numerous medical examples which clearly demonstrate the application theory Extensive coverage of the underlying theory Devotes a complete chapter to the use of software procedures data modeling essential and macros to fit mixed models This title is aimed as medical, applied data modeling essential and bio-statisticians, along with teachers data modeling essential and students of advanced statistics courses in mixed models. The book is also suitable for medical scientists who need to understand the techniques used data modeling essential and the assumptions which underpin their use.

Data modeling - In information system design, data modeling is the analysis and design of the information in the system, concentrating on the logical entities and the logical dependencies among these entities. Data modeling is an abstraction activity in that the details of the values of individual data observations are ignored in favor of the structure, relationships, names and formats of the data of interest, although a list of valid values is frequently recorded.

Environmental Modeling Center - The Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), improves numerical weather, marine and climate predictions at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), through a broad program of research in data assimilation and modeling. In support of the NCEP operational forecasting mission, the EMC develops, improves and monitors data assimilation systems and models of the atmosphere, ocean and coupled system, using advanced methods developed internally as well as cooperatively with scientists from Universities, NOAA Laboratories and other government agencies, and the international scientific community.

Air data computer - An air data computer is an essential avionics component found in modern glass cockpits. This computer, rather than individual instruments, determines the airspeed, altitude, and altitude trend data from an aircraft's pitot-static system.

Data Flow Diagram - Data flow diagrams (DFDs) are one of the three essential perspectives of SSADM. The sponsor of a project and the end users will need to be briefed and consulted throughout all stages of a systems evolution.
